The Majority Text differs from the Textus Receptus in almost 2,000 places

Here is the documented proof, drawn from peer-reviewed and widely-cited scholarly sources.

The Number: ~1,838 to ~2,000 Differences

The specific figure comes from a direct collation by Daniel B. Wallace, professor of New Testament Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. In his examination of The Greek New Testament According to the Majority Text (Hodges & Farstad, 1982), Wallace counted 1,838 differences between the Majority Text and the Textus Receptus (specifically the Oxford 1825 edition, the same one Hodges and Farstad used for comparison). Another article by Wallace at Bible.org rounds this to almost 2,000 places.
This is not a guess. It is a counted, published collation.

What Kinds of Differences? Concrete Examples

The differences are not all trivial. Wallace’s analysis and the raw collation data reveal significant departures. Here are documented categories with verse references:

1. Whole Verses Present in the TR but Absent from the Majority Text

Acts 8:37 — The eunuch’s confession of faith. The TR includes it; the Majority Text omits it.

Acts 15:34 — “Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still.” Present in TR; omitted in MT.

Acts 24:6b–8a — A substantial block of text present in TR but absent in MT.

2. The Comma Johanneum (1 John 5:7–8)

The TR includes the Trinitarian formula (“the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one”). The Majority Text rejects it, because it is not found in the majority of Greek manuscripts. This is one of the most famous cases where the TR and MT diverge sharply.

3. Revelation: Erasmus’s Back-Translation from Latin
In the last six verses of Revelation, where Erasmus had no Greek manuscript and had to translate from the Latin Vulgate back into Greek, there are 17 differences between the TR and the Majority Text. The MT follows actual Greek manuscripts; the TR follows Erasmus’s reconstructed Greek.

4. Significant Wording Changes
A small sample from the raw collation (Acts and Revelation):

| Acts 13:23
TR Reading    “raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus”
| MT Reading   “brought unto Israel salvation”

| Acts 17:25
|TR Reading     “and all things”
 | MT Reading  “in every respect”

| Acts 20:28
|TR Reading    “the church of God”
MT Reading   “the church of the Lord and God”

| Rev 11:15
|TR Reading     “The kingdoms of this world are”
MT Reading    “The kingdom of this world is”

| Rev 12:3
|TR Reading    “red dragon”
MT Reading    “dragon of fire”

| Rev 22:19
|TR Reading    “out of the book of life”
MT Reading    “from the tree of life”

| Rev 22:21
|TR Reading    “with you all”
MT Reading    “with all the saints”

These are drawn directly from the published collation list.

5. The TR Sometimes Agrees with the Critical Text Against the Majority Text
Wallace notes that in Matthew alone, he counted 48 places where the TR agrees with the Critical Text (UBS/NA) against the Majority Text. This directly undermines the claim that the TR is simply the Majority Text in print. If the TR were truly representative of the majority, it would not side with the “corrupted” Alexandrian-critical text against its own supposed tradition.

The Root Cause: The TR Is Not the Majority Text

The TR was compiled by Erasmus in 1516 from only six late Greek manuscripts, none earlier than the 10th century. He had no complete manuscript of Revelation and back-translated from the Latin Vulgate. The edition was revised multiple times (1516, 1519, 1522, 1527, 1535), correcting hundreds of errors. The edition that became the standard “TR” was actually Robert Estienne’s 1550 revision of Erasmus’s fourth edition.

Because the TR is a Renaissance editorial product—not a raw count of manuscript majority—it contains readings found in no Greek manuscript at all. The Comma Johanneum is the most famous example, but there are others. The Majority Text, by contrast, is compiled by actually counting the readings found in the majority of extant manuscripts. Where the two methods diverge, the TR and MT diverge—almost 2,000 times.

Claim & Evidence                                                                                    |

~2,000 differences: Wallace’s direct count: **1,838** differences between Hodges-Farstad MT and Oxford 1825 TR. |

Whole verses: Acts 8:37, 15:34, 24:6b–8a in TR but not MT.

Comma Johanneum: TR includes it; MT rejects it (not in majority of Greek MSS).

Revelation back-translation: 17 differences in Rev 22 where Erasmus had no Greek MS.
TR + Critical Text vs. MT: 48 agreements in Matthew alone between TR and UBS/NA against MT.
The TR and the Majority Text are not the same text. They differ in nearly 2,000 places—many of them significant. Any doctrine (such as VPP) that conflates the two is built on a historical falsehood.
