JK, QSY, Prabhudas are false teachers (V)

These false teachers reject sound doctrine and treat godliness as a financial enterprise, thinking they can profit from religious profession. (1 Tim 6:3–10) This mercenary motivation directly exemplifies the principle Paul articulates in verse 10: “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” (1 Tim 6:3–10)

The Connection: Greed as Spiritual Corruption

Paul’s warning about the love of money connects directly to the false teachers’ situation, since their desire for earthly wealth has led some to have “wandered away from the faith.”[1] The false teachers demonstrate how financial obsession becomes the gateway to doctrinal deviation. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. (1 Tim 6:3–10) Their arrogance, word-quibbling, and relational toxins all flow from this foundational corruption: they have subordinated truth itself to personal gain.

Greed as the Root System

Paul warns against the dangers of greed; the craving for wealth is the problem, not money itself.[1] The false teachers exemplify this distinction perfectly—they haven’t merely accumulated resources; they’ve allowed the desire for money to reshape their entire ministry. Any craving that exceeds someone’s desire for Christ is inevitably going to lead them “astray from the faith.”[1] Their case proves the proverb: whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. (Eccles 5:10)

The Antidote: Contentment and True Gain

Paul’s response reframes the entire discussion. Godliness with contentment is great gain. (1 Tim 6:3–10) A focus on eternal things will drive a far healthier Christian ambition; if Timothy is to flee from the crass materialism Paul has condemned, he must pursue “righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.”[2] The false teachers’ financial hunger has blinded them to the only genuine wealth—spiritual transformation rooted in Christ.
