STEPHANUS' TEXTUS RECEPTUS IS NOT PERFECT:
PART 1: WHO WAS STEPHANUS & HIS METHOD
Robert Stephanus (1503-1559):
- French printer, not a theologian
- Created his Greek NT from LIMITED late medieval manuscripts (12th-14th century)
- Had NO ancient papyri or early manuscripts (4th century and earlier)
- Made EDITORIAL CHOICES, not merely copying
His Problem:
- Worked 1,500+ years AFTER the original
- Never claimed his text was perfect
- Published FIVE different editions that DIFFER from each other
PART 2: PROOF #1 - HE CREATED READINGS NOT IN ANY GREEK MANUSCRIPT
Revelation 22:19 in Stephanus' TR:
"...from the tree of life AND FROM THE HOLY CITY"
The Problem: This phrase appears in NO Greek manuscript before modern times.
What He Did: Stephanus TRANSLATED it from the Latin Vulgate BACK into Greek, creating a Greek reading that never existed in any Greek text.
This Proves:
- Stephanus invented text based on Latin, not Greek manuscripts
- He wasn't merely preserving—he was CREATING readings
PART 3: PROOF #2 - HE INCLUDED LATER ADDITIONS
Three passages Stephanus included that don't appear in early manuscripts:
-
Mark 16:9-20 (Longer ending)
- Absent from P45 (3rd century), Sinaiticus, Vaticanus (4th century)
- First appears in 9th century Byzantine manuscripts
-
John 7:53-8:11 (Woman caught in adultery)
- Absent from P66 (2nd century), P75 (3rd century), early manuscripts
- Added later in Byzantine tradition
-
1 John 5:7 (Comma Johanneum - Trinity verse)
- NO Greek manuscript has this before 12th century
- Only in late Latin manuscripts
- Translated back from Latin into Greek
Result: KJV includes passages that aren't in the original, based on Stephanus' choices.
PART 4: PROOF #3 - EARLY MANUSCRIPTS CONTRADICT HIM
When scholars discovered ancient papyri and manuscripts:
- P45 (3rd century Gospel papyrus)
- P66, P75 (2nd-3rd century John papyri)
- Codex Sinaiticus (4th century)
- Codex Vaticanus (4th century)
They Found: These CONSISTENTLY differ from Stephanus' TR.
What This Means:
- Early manuscripts = closer to original (1,200+ years closer)
- Stephanus' sources = late, corrupted manuscripts
- Stephanus inherited corrupted texts and perpetuated the errors
PART 5: PROOF #4 - HIS FIVE EDITIONS CONTRADICT EACH OTHER
Stephanus Published Five Different Editions:
- 1546, 1549, 1550, 1551, 1555
They Have Different Readings
This Proves:
- He wasn't working from one "perfect" source
- He recognized his earlier editions had problems
- He made EDITORIAL DECISIONS, not merely copying
If the text were perfectly preserved, why revise it five times?
PART 6: PROOF #5 - HIS OWN NOTES SHOW UNCERTAINTY
Stephanus' Apparatus Criticus Shows:
- He knew about variant readings
- He had to CHOOSE between different manuscripts
- He recorded alternative readings
- He was UNCERTAIN about many decisions
He Never Claimed Perfection: His notes prove he knew his work was provisional and interpretive.
PART 7: WHAT THIS MEANS
Stephanus' TR Is:
- ❌ NOT perfectly preserved
- ❌ NOT based on original manuscripts
- ❌ NOT the only valid Greek text
- ✅ A valuable but IMPERFECT medieval tradition
This Refutes KJV-Only Claims:
They Claim: "The TR is God's perfectly preserved text"
Reality:
- Stephanus created readings from Latin that don't exist in Greek
- Early manuscripts (1,200 years earlier) contradict him
- We can IDENTIFY specific errors in his text
- His own revisions prove he knew it was imperfect
They Claim: "Modern scholars corrupted the text"
Reality:
- Modern scholars COMPARED early manuscripts with the TR
- Early manuscripts show ORIGINAL readings before corruption
- Using early evidence FIXES corruption, doesn't create it
CONCLUSION
Stephanus' Textus Receptus demonstrates:
- Textual transmission is complex—no single manuscript is "perfect"
- Editorial judgment is necessary—different editors made different choices
- Early manuscripts are more reliable than late medieval ones
- Comparison with multiple witnesses is ESSENTIAL to find original text
- God's Word is preserved through MULTIPLE WITNESSES, not one "perfect" text
Bottom Line: We can PROVE Stephanus made errors by comparing his text with manuscripts 1,000 years earlier. This is why the KJV-Only claim of "perfect preservation" is historically and textually FALSE.
