These aren’t contradictory positions—they describe different dimensions of spiritual reality working together.
God’s Ultimate Victory, Our Active Participation
The Old Testament repeatedly affirms that the battle belongs to God (1 Sam 17:47; 2 Chron 20:15), yet this doesn’t mean believers remain passive. Rather, God’s sovereignty and human responsibility operate simultaneously. When the Israelites faced the Red Sea, God told them to “be still,” (Exod 14:14) but this stillness was strategic—they were to trust God’s intervention while positioned for deliverance. Similarly, God promised to fight for Israel “against your enemies to give you victory,” (Deut 20:4) but this occurred within the context of Israel’s own military campaigns.
The Nature of Our Fight
The New Testament reframes the battle entirely. Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of evil (Eph 6:10–18)—a fundamentally different enemy than physical armies. Though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does; our weapons are not the weapons of the world. (2 Cor 10:3–5) Believers are called to “fight the good fight of the faith,” (1 Tim 6:12) and Paul describes his life as having “fought the good fight” and “kept the faith.” (2 Tim 4:7)
This fight involves taking a stand against the devil’s schemes (Eph 6:10–18) through truth, righteousness, the gospel, faith, salvation, and God’s word (Eph 6:10–18)—spiritual armor, not military weapons. Believers resist the devil by standing firm in the faith, (1 Pet 5:8–9) and are urged to contend for the faith entrusted to God’s people. (Jude 3)
The Paradox Resolved
Victory comes “not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,” (Zech 4:6) yet the Spirit empowers believers to actively resist, stand firm, and persevere. We are “more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Rom 8:37)—the victory is Christ’s, but we participate in it through faithful obedience. God secures the ultimate outcome; we engage the battle through prayer, truth, and spiritual discipline.
