Book Review: Heresy: A History of Defending the Truth by Alister McGrath

There is a trend today to see heresy as a forbidden fruit. What is heresy?; Who says these views are wrong?; Aren’t heresies just the losers in a power struggle?–these are but a few examples of the questions being asked about heresy. Alister McGrath’s book,Heresy: A History of Defending the Truth [1] seeks to explore many of these issues while providing a historical background for those looking into the topic.

“A heresy,” states McGrath, “is a doctrine that ultimately destroys, destabilizes, or distorts a mystery rather than preserving it… A heresy is a failed attempt at orthodoxy, whose fault lies not in its willingness to explore possibilities or press conceptual boundaries, but in its unwillingness to accept that it has in fact failed.”[2]

One might wonder why McGrath utilizes this view of heresy, and it is important to see that his definition stands between two misunderstandings of the historical context of the development of heresy. McGrath argues that there are two positions about the history of heresy which are extremely popular but also highly anachronistic. The first is that heresy is something from outside of the church which was able to somehow “get into” the church and corrupt it;[3] the second erroneous view is that “What determines whether a set of ideas is heretical or not is whether those ideas are approved and adopted by those who happen to be in power. Orthodoxy is simply the set of ideas that won out, heresies are losers.”[4] Both positions suffer from an anachronistic view of the history of heresy and tend to over-emphasize certain aspects of that development.

The notion that heresy is some kind of “Trojan horse” smuggled into Christianity from without is historically untenable.[5] Furthermore, this view generally holds that “Heresy was a later deviation from [the] original pure doctrine.”[6] Instead, “heretics were insiders who threatened to subvert and disrupt [the church]….”[7] However, the fact is that the notion of early Christianity holding to the best orthodoxy is a purely fictional historical concept. Rather, doctrine developed as new challenged were presented to the Christian faith or new truths were explored.[8] Heresy was part of this development. Heresies were ideas that failed to take hold within Christianity because it was deemed to undermine the strength of the Christian faith as a whole.[9]

Therefore, McGrath argues, it can be seen that the second view of the development of heresy is also historically mistaken. There was an orthodox core from which doctrine developed, and heresies were seen as defective.[10] “The process of marginalization or neglect of these ‘lost Christianities’ generally has more to do with an emerging consensus within the church that they are inadequate than with any attempt to impose an unpopular orthodoxy on an unwilling body of believers.”[11] Heresy was “an intellectually defective vision” of Christianity,[12] rejected because it could not stand up to the theological challenges raised against it.[13]

McGrath provides more development of the concept of heresy, and then turns from his analysis of the rise and rejection of heresy to a historical account of several early heresies. His analysis of these early heresies (ebionitism, docetism, valentinism, arianism, donatism, and pelagianism) provides significant historical support for his thesis that heresies are ultimately insufficient accounts of Christian theology and were rejected thereby. Against the thesis of Walter Bauer, who held that orthodoxy was an “ideological accident,” it is rather the case that “The relative weakness of institutional ecclesiastical structures at this time, including those at Rome, suggest that the quality of the ideas themselves played a significant role in their evaluation…”[14]

It is also important to note that heresies are not necessarily tools aimed to destroy Christianity from within. McGrath is particularly concerned with the contextualization of heresies. These were often developed within a context of a question, like “What is the nature of Christ?” (Ebionitism). “The problem [of heresy] lay not with the motivations of [heretics], but rather with the outcomes of their voyages of theological exploration.”[15]

McGrath ends Heresy with an exploration of the origins and development of heresy. Heresy, he argues, develops through 5 major strands, each of which usually involves turning theology towards: cultural norms, rational norms, social identity, religious accomodation, and ethical concerns (180ff). Heresies will continue to emerge as Christianity faces new challenges. Furthermore, orthodoxy is itself a process of ongoing development.[16]

McGrath concludes with a vision for orthodoxy: “If Christ is indeed the ‘Lord of the Imagination’… the real challenge is for the churches to demonstrate that orthodoxy is imaginatively compelling, emotionally engaging, aesthetically enhancing, and personally liberating. We await this development with eager anticipation.”[17]

Heresy is indeed something which has caught the popular imagination. McGrath’s book offers a reasonable, sound defense of Christian orthodoxy in an era wherein heresy is often portrayed as an unfairly suppressed system which should be resurrected. By providing a significant investigation of the historical background and development of heresy, McGrath avoids the two ahistorical extreme views of heresy: that it was entirely a plague from outside the church or that it was merely one of many competing ideas that happened to lose.

Christians would do well to have knowledge of the development of Christian doctrine. As more challenges are raised to the Christian faith, orthodoxy will have to continue to respond. Without a historical grounding firmly in place, Christianity is liable to change with the winds. Heresies repeat themselves,[18] and Christians need to be ready to respond to these alterations of the faith. Heresies have historically been rejected not due to an internal power struggle, but rather due to their insufficient intellectual bases.

Alister McGrath’s Heresy: A History of Defending the Truth is one of those books Christians should have within reach on their shelf in order to readily access it as challenges arise. He provides an enormously useful historical evaluation of heresy which allows readers to avoid the pitfalls of ahistorical views. Furthermore, McGrath convincingly demonstrates the reasoning behind labeling a position as heretical follows from a corruption of Christianity which makes it less theologically or intellectaully viable. By providing Christians with a vision of orthodoxy and heresy that is both aware of its past and looking towards the future, McGrath has written an invaluable source.

Decision Making

“If an important decision is to be made, they [the Persians] discuss the question when they are drunk, and the following day the master of the house where the discussion was held submits their decision for reconsideration when they are sober. If they still approve it, it is adopted; if not, it is abandoned. Conversely, any decision they make when they are sober, is reconsidered afterwards when they are drunk.”

It is better for Bible Presbyterian pastors to drink a few cup of wine before they make decision.
Rather than quarrel all the time, and then split our Bible Presbyterian Churches....

They reject FEBC!

This is a small matter!

Verbal Plenary Preservation (VPP) is a small matter to us, it is not a big deal at all. The theologians will see my blogs as a small matter too, a small critique! They will say they are persecuted for Christ's sake, they said they are being judged for the gospel's sake, so they said they are blessed, whenever people like me attack them with writings, they see themselves like Paul, being judged unfairly.

Whenever people like me say bad things about them, their hearts will be harden and harden, and they will say among themselves, so and so, say this and say that about us, we are blessed because we are being persecuted for Christ's sake. This is what they are thinking when they read my blogs. Doesn't matter what they have said.

I say again, until today, VPP is a small matter to me, what matter most is how to encourage people to read the Bible more and more! What matter is how to live out our Christian life in Christ, what matter more is how to witness for Christ!

Faith come by hearing, hearing by the word of God!

Faith come by hearing, hearing by the word of God!

"....The VPP of Scripture is a position of faith that is based solely on the Word of God."

I personally do not agree on this statement!

Just in case, they quoted this verse, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Rom 10:17) to support their VPP.

VPP is a blind faith, not base on the Word of God, VPP is a teaching from man, not from God's Word! Where in the Bible, saying that we have only one perfect Bible translation! Tell me that verse! And which Bible verse say we have many other corrupted Bible translation, for example Chinese Union Version.

In saying Chinese Union Version is a corrupted Bible translation, they are attacking the Chinese Bible, it is attacking those who translating the Bible into Chinese language! Are they the translators not pious than us, more pious than those false theologians? Who are we to attack those devoted Chinese Bible translators! Great sin in attacking them! We believe Chinese Bible is not perfect, but it is accepted as our Bible translation! There are better Bible translations, off course!

The day those theologians split and chase after the Chinese Pastors away, that day they have done a great sin unto the Body of God! Listen to this, "the body of Christ is one!" This is well know in our Bible. Never before we have any time this in our Bible "the Bible of Christ is one!" No, never!

The devil try to confuse some of us, and the theologians have believe in its lies!

FEBC and Life BPC are Church of Sardis

Revelation 3 “To the angel of the church in Sardis write:

These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. 2 Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. 3 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.

4 Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. 5 The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels. 6 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

The New International Version (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2011), Re 3:1–6.
Wake Up—The Message to the Church in Sardis (3:1–6)

“You Are Dead!” (1–3)

The two most adverse reports are sent to Sardis and to Laodicea. In this letter to Sardis, Jesus passes over any estimate of their “deeds” and their “reputation” to give the bottom line: “You are dead” (Revelation 3:1). Their only hope is to “Wake up!” How do they do this? They must complete the deeds they began at a former time, “Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent” (Revelation 3:3). What will the consequences be if this is not done? Certainly it will be no less than His warning to the Ephesians, “I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place” (Revelation 2:5). Or to Pergamum, “Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth” (Revelation 2:16). But to Sardis, Jesus simply warns, “I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you” (Revelation 3:3).

A Few Still Live (4–6)

Even in a congregation judged as dead, a few individuals have managed to stay alive and refused to be entangled in either the sin of the world or the apathy of a dying congregation. They “have not soiled their clothes.” Jesus promises, “They will walk with me, dressed in white” (Revelation 3:4). He promises the one who overcomes, “I will never blot out his name from the book of life” (Revelation 3:5). By inference, Jesus is saying unless a person remains faithful, his name will be blotted out.
As Jesus introduces himself to this church, He is described as holding the sevenfold Spirit (the Holy Spirit) in one hand and the seven stars (angels or messengers) in the other. This is appropriate to the deepest need of the congregation. They need life, and the Spirit is associated with giving life: “The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life” (Job 33:4).

False teachers in Far Eastern Bible College, Singapore

1. The warning against false teachers
Christ then said, “Beware of false prophets” (Matthew 7:15). For every true prophet calling people to the narrow way, are a multiplicity of false prophets calling people to the broad way that leads to destruction. Christ’s warning [about false teachers] was not new. Deuteronomy 13:1-5 documents the presence of false teaching during the days of Moses. In Isaiah 30:9-14chronicles its existence in the kingdom of Judah. There are many warnings about false teachers in Scripture.1. 2 John 7–John said, “Many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ cometh in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.”
2. Romans 16:17-18–Paul said, “I beseech you, brethren, mark them who cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ but their own body, and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the innocent.” They are dangerous because they claim to be from God and to speak God’s Word.
3. Jeremiah 5:31–God said, “The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means, and my people love to have it so.”
4. Jeremiah 14:14–God said, “The prophets prophesy lies in my name. I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spoke unto them; they prophesy unto you a false vision.”
2. The description of false teachers
False teachers are dangerous because their deception is damning. And it comes from that most damning deceiver of all, Satan, who disguises himself as an angel of light and his servants as ministers of righteousness (2 Cor. 11:13-15). Some false teachers are heretics–those who openly reject the Word of God and teach contrary to it. Others are apostates–those who once followed the faith but have since turned away. Then there are deceivers who pretend to still believe the truth. They want to look like orthodox fundamental evangelical Christians, but they are liars.
3. The revelation of false teachers
In Matthew 7:16 Jesus says, “Ye shall know them by their fruits.” It’s not what they say but what you see in their lives that matters. A false teacher cannot produce good fruit because evil cannot produce good (v. 17).
False teachers will produce evil fruit, but they will try to cloak it. Inevitably they hide their bad fruit under ecclesiastical garb or isolate it from accountability. People can’t get near enough to them to see the reality of their lives. Some of them hide their evil fruit under a holy vocabulary or an association with fruitful Christians. Some of them cover their evil fruit with biblical knowledge. But they can’t hide it from everyone all the time. If you closely examine a false teacher, you will see his evil fruit.
CONCLUSION
How can we be alert to the infiltration of false teachers? Ask yourself these questions about the Bible teachers you encounter.
A. How Is the Teacher Using Scripture?
Is there error in his understanding of Scripture? Is his interpretation sound? Is it biblical? Is it legitimate? Don’t look at his personality. Don’t look at the religious trappings. Don’t only look only at his associations, although that will tell you something if those associations are negative. Listen to what he says. Do what 1 John 4:1 says: test him to see if he’s from God. What is his approach to Scripture? Is he teaching things that go beyond Scripture? Is he saying things that sound good but you can’t find verses to support it?
B. What Is the Teacher’s Goal?
Does he have a spiritual goal? Is his primary desire in life to produce people who consummately love God? Or is he characterized by self-love, self-aggrandizement, possessiveness, and materialism? What is his objective? Is it love for God and for everyone else? Is his objective holiness, a pure heart, a good conscience, and faith without hypocrisy?
C. What Is the Teacher’s Motive?
Does he demonstrate a selfless motive? Can you see humility, meekness, and selflessness in his life? Or does it appear that while he’s helping others he is also becoming quite wealthy? Is he self-indulgent at the expense of the people he is supposed to be ministering to?
D. What Is the Teacher’s Effect?
Does his followers clearly understand the gospel of Jesus Christ? Do they understand the proper use of the law?
Check his doctrine, check his goal, check his motive, and check his followers. As you do, you’ll sense the need for urgency in dealing with false teachers.

Inauguration of the Bible-Presbyterian Church in Singapore on 8th October, 2011

GREETINGS FROM OUR OBSERVER
BIBLE-PRESBYTERIAN CHURCHES
at the Inauguration of the
Bible-Presbyterian Church in Singapore on 8th October, 2011

Mt Carmel B-P Church
The Pastors and Elders of Mt Carmel B-P Church welcome the move to form a B-P Presbytery. We are encouraged by the atmosphere of congeniality, humility and like-mindedness in the deliberations that led to this happy occasion. We also appreciate the Zion pastors for exercising leadership, patience and perseverance in persuading B-P churches to emerge from their immediate congregational pre-occupations and work towards renewal of fellowship and ties. It is an integral part of our Presbyterian heritage that autonomous congregations unite as an ecclesiastical federal assembly for mutual edification, witness and support. At the same time, let us re-discover the Bible-Presbyterian ethos of biblical soundness and separation to maintain organizational purity, but in a ministerial and declarative manner that respects and edifies our churches. Mt Carmel hopes to play its part in a B-P Presbytery that glorifies God and extends His Kingdom.

Faith B-P Church
The inauguration tonight of the Presbytery of the "BIBLE-PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN SINGAPORE" is in keeping with the worldwide system of Presbyterianism. May it be our prayer that in due course as the Lord tarries, our B-P Churches will develop more presbyteries to form a "Synod" again.

Galilee B-P Church
Thank God for moving the hearts of the leaders of Zion Serangoon, Zion Bishan, Herald B-P Church and Emmanuel B-P Church to come together to form the new Presbytery of the Bible-Presbyterian Church of Singapore. We had been saddened over the closure of the old Presbytery and Synod in 1988. We thank God for this resurrection and renewal. We pray God that the new Presbytery would be a source of great blessing as it seeks to bring together brethren of like-precious faith under the same umbrella to serve as a united witness in Singapore and to advance God's Kingdom. In these last and darkening days prior to our Lord's return, how necessary it is to have a united body to stand for the truth of God's Word and to speak out against unbelief. May the Lord be pleased to bless the new Presbytery and may more B-P churches be minded to stand unitedly against the inroads of ecumenism, charismatism, unbelief and moral degradation. May God help us. Jude 1:3 "…earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints".

Grace B-P Church
Praise the Lord for the formation of the new Presbytery of the B-P Church in Singapore. We pray that the Lord will bless and prosper the Presbytery. May we see the Lord moving the hearts of all like-minded B-P Churches coming again together one day. It is not impossible. This is only the beginning. (Prov. 3: 5-6)

Hebron B-P Church
Congratulations to the member churches of: Zion Serangoon B-P Church, Zion Bishan B-P Church, Herald B-P Church, and Emmanuel B-P Church, who form the new Presbytery of the BPCS. After 23 years of separated independence, this is a good start for the B-P churches to re-unite together under the banner of the BPCS. Hebron B-P Church supports this Presbytery as an observer church and, we hope that as time goes on, the investment placed into the Presbytery by each B-P church would further unite and strengthen the bonds of friendship and shared common values that will lead to the expansion and growth of the Presbytery for the glory of God. "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen."

Mt Hermon B-P Church
The prayers of Mount Hermon are with the churches inaugurating the Presbytery today. May love and unity like the dew of Hermon fall on the BP churches in Singapore, drawing us all closer to the Lord and to one another (Psalm 133).

Mt Horeb B-P Church
Thanks be to God for the Inaugural Meeting of the Presbytery. We wish to thank Pastor Quek and Pastor David Wong especially for their faithfulness and endurance throughout the process. The Word of the Lord in Ephesians 4:11-16 reminds us of our role as Pastors and Elders. We are to prepare God's people for ministry and to build up the church in unity of faith in Christ Jesus. We will then not be tossed about by every wind of false teachings. May the Lord bless and keep the Presbytery united in love and in truth to the glory of God.

Olivet B-P Church
Greetings in the Precious Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! It is a joy to see fellow pastors coming together to form the new Presbytery. Once again, we are reminded that we are part of a bigger family, where we can fellowship, share, exchange ideas, support and encourage one another. We thank the members of the organizing committee for their perseverance and hard work in laying the groundwork for its formation. The formation of the Presbytery looked dim initially, but the Lord graciously opens the pathway and now, praise the Lord, the Presbytery is being formed. It is my prayer that the Presbytery will be conducted in a better, more effective and biblical manner than the old Synod, upholding both grace and truth which are exemplified by our Lord Jesus Christ (John 1:18). May the Presbytery serve as a common platform for church leaders to come together with the purpose of seeking partnership and discovering efficacious ways to minister to our congregations in this new, challenging and fast changing era. "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ" (Phil 1:6).

Shalom B-P Church
Today marks a new chapter and milestone of the B-P Church with the inaugural meeting of the Presbytery of the B-P Church in Singapore. We congratulate the four pioneer member churches - Zion Bishan, Zion Serangoon, Emmanuel and Herald - for taking the lead in this initiative, and, by God's grace, be instrumental in the strengthening and unifying of the B-P Church, for the glory of God and the advancement of the gospel ministry. Our prayers and well wishes are with you all. May the Lord's blessing and enabling rest upon each of you - individually and collectively - and may you prosper in all your endeavours. "Let Thy work appear unto Thy servants, and Thy glory unto their children. And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish Thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish Thou it" (Psalm 90:16-17).
